What is Microsoft Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a cloud platform used for application hosting, data storage, networking, identity, analytics, and AI workloads. Because of its integration with the Microsoft ecosystem, it is often chosen for enterprise identity, Windows workloads, and hybrid cloud scenarios.

Core Components

Azure includes building blocks such as virtual machines, App Service, Functions, SQL Database, Blob Storage, Virtual Network, Entra ID, and monitoring services. Architecture planning usually covers subscription structure, resource groups, role-based access, region choice, network security, and cost management.

In hybrid scenarios, on-premises Active Directory, VPN or ExpressRoute connectivity, and existing licensing can influence the design.

Business Use

Enterprise applications, intranet portals, data warehouse projects, .NET services, and systems with strong identity requirements can run on Azure. AWS and Google Cloud solve similar infrastructure problems with different tooling and pricing models.

Azure should be evaluated not only by its service catalog, but also by team skills, Microsoft 365 or Entra integration, data location, compliance requirements, and total cost of ownership.
